Precipitating phosphorus as struvite from anaerobically-digested dairy manure

چکیده
Midwestern US agroecosystems suffer greatly due to excess phosphorus (P) in runoff from land-applied manure. Precipitating P as struvite would remove it the manure stream, allowing efficient storage, transportation, and use slow-release fertilizer. To achieve precipitation, organic solids calcium (Ca) must first be removed This study assessed precipitation dairy using a novel processing pipeline: diluting manure, then acidifying treating with Ca chelator, followed by simultaneously flocculating solids, finally raising pH precipitate struvite. The manipulations were determined through chemical equilibrium modeling Visual MINTEQ. Oxalic acid was most chelator tested, reducing soluble 200 mg/L below 40 while leaving magnesium concentrations unaffected. An anionic low-weight flocculant effective at removing 1.2% 0.5% diluted (4:1) process train comprising oxalic flocculant, reduced dissolved 93% producing an estimated yield equivalent 72% of total initially present Results this show that simple one-step removal can efficiency comparable multi-step methods.

Overcoming challenges to struvite recovery from anaerobically digested dairy manure.
Recovering struvite from dairy manure has consistently posed problems for researchers. This study separated solids from anaerobically digested dairy manure using a filtration system. Filtrate was rich in free magnesium (160 to 423 mg/L), ammonium (320 to 1800 mg N/L) and orthophosphate (93 to 332 mg P/L). High concentrations of free calcium (128 to 361 mg/L) and alkalinity (3309 to 6567 mg/L as...
متن کاملAmmonia removal from anaerobically digested dairy manure by struvite precipitation
Ammonia is one of the most important contaminants impairing the quality of water resources. When this is considered along with the fact that the global demand for nitrogenous fertilizers is in constant rise, the need for recovery as well as removal of nitrogen is well justified. Crystallization of N and P in the form of struvite (MgNH4PO4 6H2O), which is a slow releasing and valuable fertilizer...
متن کاملReleasing phosphorus from calcium for struvite fertilizer production from anaerobically digested dairy effluent.
Being a non-renewable resource and a source of potential water pollution, phosphorus could be recovered from animal manure in the form of struvite (MgNH4PO4.6H2O) to be used as a slow-release fertilizer. It was found recently that the majority of phosphorus in anaerobically digested dairy effluent is tied up in a fine suspended calcium-phosphate solid, thus becoming unavailable for struvite for...
متن کاملCharacterizing the Performance of Gas-Permeable Membranes as an Ammonia Recovery Strategy from Anaerobically Digested Dairy Manure
Capturing ammonia from anaerobically digested manure could simultaneously decrease the adverse effects of ammonia inhibition on biogas production, reduce reactive nitrogen (N) loss to the environment, and produce mineral N fertilizer as a by-product. In this study, gas permeable membranes (GPM) were used to capture ammonia from dairy manure and digestate by the diffusion of gaseous ammonia acro...
متن کاملBiochar from anaerobically digested sugarcane bagasse.
This study was designed to investigate the effect of anaerobic digestion on biochar produced from sugarcane bagasse. Sugarcane bagasse was anaerobically digested to produce methane. The digested residue and fresh bagasse was pyrolyzed separately into biochar at 600 degrees C in nitrogen environment. The digested bagasse biochar (DBC) and undigested bagasse biochar (BC) were characterized to det...
